Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2022 EQS580 vehicles. The multi-purpose camera and the rearview mirror may be insufficiently attached to the windshield and may detach, impairing front passenger air bag deployment and various assistance systems, including Adaptive Cruise Control (DISTRONIC) with active steering assist, Brake Assists with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assists, Traffic Sign Assist, Augmented Reality function and Rain and Light Sensors.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the windshield and reinstall the multi-purpose camera and rearview mirror as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 11, 2023. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2022 EQS (297 platform) vehicles, the multi-purpose camera and the rearview mirror may be insufficiently attached to the windshield and might detach, impairing front passenger air bag deployment and various assistance systems, including Adaptive Cruise Control (DISTRONIC) with active steering assist, Brake Assist with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Augmented Reality function and Rain and Light Sensors. Impaired deployment of an air bag could increase the risk of injury, and impaired driver assistance safety systems could increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership will replace the windshield and reinstall the multi-purpose camera and rearview mirror.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.

Chronology :
At the end of June 2022, MBAG received a report from vehicle production, describing an instance in which a single vehicle with an insufficiently mounted multi-purpose camera was detected.
In July 2022, MBAG started initial analyses together with the supplier to identify the failure mechanism and root cause. In parallel, windshields in storage and vehicles in the production plant were inspected in order to identify any additional parts that may exhibit the subject issue.
Upon further analysis, the adhesive joint between the multi-purpose camera, interior mirror and the windshield might not meet the specified strength requirements.
From August 2022 onwards, test drives were conducted in order to investigate potential consequences of an adhesive joint not meeting the specified strength to vehicle functions and potential impact to occupant safety.
At the same time, the situation was analyzed in the field.
From October 2022 onwards, the failure mechanism of an adhesive joint that does not meet specifications was investigated with material experts in order to identify whether a potential loosening of the components would occur at a very early point in a vehicle’s lifetime, i.e. whether the issue would be safely detected during the vehicle production and logistics process.
In January 2023, additional analyses concluded that a loosening of the multi-purpose camera and interior mirror after vehicle delivery cannot be ruled out.
On February 3, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information (such as the numbers of deaths and/or injuries) related to this defect in the USA.
