Update Transmission Control Unit Software
This is to notify you of the Emission Recall Campaign LAUNCH notification to update the transmission control unit software in 1,344 Model Year (“MY”) 2015 ML-Class (166 platform). A customer notification letter will be mailed to customers advising of this emission recall, which may generate questions. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on January 27, 2023.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that certain diesel vehicles that have already received the Approved Emission Modification (AEM) may not have the correct transmission control unit software installed, which could potentially increase the exhaust gas emissions and fuel consumption. Vehicle owners may also experience noticeable noise, vibration, and roughness during idling and potential illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary Recall Campaign in which an authorized Mercedes- Benz dealer will update the transmission control unit software in the affected vehicles.
Parts
Parts are not required for this campaign since the remedy is software based.
Perform XENTRY Diagnosis procedure in transmission control unit
Model 166.004
- Ensure use of XENTRY Diagnosis version BD/DVD (09/2021) or higher.
- Before starting the work procedure, install all the add-ons that are updated daily in XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Make sure to follow the operation steps exactly as described in XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Use a charger to ensure sufficient power supply of the vehicle on-board electrical system battery (greater than 12.5 V).
- If XENTRY Diagnosis is already connected to the vehicle, start with operation step 2.
If two or more software updates or SCN codings are performed during one workshop visit, the operation items 02-4762 and 02-5058 may only be invoiced once for each workshop order.
Work procedure
- Connect XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Perform XENTRY Diagnosis procedure in transmission control unit VGS4NAG2.
To do this, select menu item “Quick test view – Y3/8n4 fully integrated transmission control (VGS) – Special procedures – Check of adaptation values (EEPROM)”.
Then follow the user guidance in XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Disconnect XENTRY Diagnosis.

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is available for purchase from Mercedes-Benz USA.
In order to use the J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the purchaser must furnish their own:
- Windows based PC or laptop*
- J2534 compliant interface box*1*
*Must be purchased from a third party company and are not available from Mercedes-Benz USA LLC.

Vehicle Coverage
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles has coverage for all required functions associated to reprogramming, initialization, and fault clearing of emission control modules (engine and transmission) fitted to vehicles 2004 Model Year and newer. Additionally all access and functionality required in regard the configuration via SCN Coding and/or CVN Coding is covered.
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is delivered via DVD media which is delivered monthly for the license term of one year upon purchase.
- All control unit software (reprogramming calibrations) is contained within J2534 DVD media.
Terms and conditions
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is purchased in 1-year license increments. During that license term the user will receive an initial software package, license key, SCN/CVN Coding information/access as well as monthly updates via DVD media.
- Additional updates of software after the 1st year can be purchased at additional cost, however are not required for the system to continue functioning.
