Check for Water entry in the Spare Wheel Well
This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Update to check for water entry in the spare wheel well on 348,1833 Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2020 GLE/ML and GLE Coupe (166 and 292 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on February 10, 2023.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2020 GLE/ML (166 platform) and GLE Coupe (292 platform) vehicles, water might intrude into the rear area of the vehicle and, over time, accumulate in the spare wheel well. In certain driving situations, and depending on the amount of water that has entered the spare wheel well, the accumulated water could intermittently contact the fuel pump control unit. Consequently, the fuel supply to the engine could be interrupted, which would lead to a loss of propulsion without warning. In such circumstances, the risk of a crash could be increased. Before the issue occurs, the driver may be made aware of water infiltration due to a damp carpet in the rear of the vehicle or the sound of water sloshing in the spare tire wheel well. In some cases, the driver could also be alerted to the condition by illumination of the check engine light in the instrument cluster.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will install a water drain plug in the spare wheel well on the affected vehicles, check for water infiltration into the spare wheel well, and replace the fuel pump control unit, if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for rental car companies to rent vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Notice to California Dealers: As required by 13 CCR 2117, a Proof of Correction (“POC”) certificate showing that the vehicle has been repaired under this recall must be issued by the authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer, and that such a certificate may be required by California as a condition of vehicle re-registration or operation. Please reference this POC in the attached work instructions. Failure to complete this step may result in fines and penalties and lead to customer dissatisfaction.

Part 573 Submission
Original Submitted to Portal December 23, 2022
Chronology-Only section
Supplement to Original Submission – April 17, 2023
Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination Supplement for ODI 22-00855-28895-10
In June 2018, Mercedes-Benz
AG became aware of isolated customer complaints outside the U.S. associated with potential water penetration into the rear interior area of certain Mercedes-Benz
vehicles. The company initiated analyses of these customer complaints beginning in June 2018. Several vehicles involved in the field complaints were obtained for examination at Mercedes-Benz
AG’s facilities in Germany. These analyses identified no indications of a systematic failure that could account for water penetration into the rear of the vehicles or failure of equipment such as the fuel pump control unit.
Nevertheless, in February 2019, Mercedes-Benz
AG instructed relevant departments to further investigate and attempt to identify the cause of the complaints. Whether and how water might penetrate into the spare wheel well, and whether any such water ingress might affect the operation of other vehicle equipment are difficult and complex questions, involving many variables and unknown factors.
In March 2019, the company became aware of field complaints in the U.S. involving water penetration into the rear interior. Accordingly, it initiated further tests in June 2019 to analyze such water infiltration and its potential consequences. Mercedes-Benz
continued these analyses through November 2019, including evaluating whether different vehicle models or configurations may influence potential water infiltration. The Company conducted analyses to determine if water that entered the spare wheel well might come into contact with the fuel pump control unit, which is also positioned in that area of the vehicle, testing scenarios involving different control unit installation positions within the spare wheel well.
Continuing its investigation in 2020, Mercedes-Benz
analyzed whether development or production deviations, customer uses, or different ambient conditions might contribute to water infiltration into the vehicles. Using collected field data, Mercedes-Benz
developed a detailed estimate of when in a vehicle’s life and under what conditions water infiltration to the spare wheel well might occur. In parallel, Mercedes-Benz
AG continued field analyses of limited individual field complaints.
From March to October 2021, Mercedes-Benz
re-evaluated all available studies, field complaint data and driving test data to determine whether water infiltration in the affected vehicles posed a risk to the fuel supply to the engine (possibly through a fuel pump control unit failure). Mercedes-Benz
simultaneously initiated research to develop potential remedies to eliminate the risk that a fuel pump control unit could come into contact with water in the spare wheel well.
In early 2022, the detailed forecast of potential occurrences based on vehicles’ useful life and ambient conditions was updated to incorporate all known complaints involving water infiltration into the rear interior of potentially affected vehicles. From April to September 2022, Mercedes-Benz
categorized all information regarding field complaints and dealer correspondence, to evaluate potential consequences associated with water accumulation in the spare wheel well. As part of that review, Mercedes-Benz
determined that in some instances vehicles could lose propulsion without advance warning to the driver. In October-November 2022, Mercedes-Benz
integrated these analyses with all prior investigations and studies and analyzed potential correlations between production periods and complaints.
Based on all of those analyses, MBAG determined on December 16, 2022 that a potential safety risk associated with the issue cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
Mercedes-Benz
AG is currently aware of 807 warranty claims, field reports, and service reports in the US from March 28, 2019 to April 14, 2023. These warranty claims/field reports/service reports represent approximately 0.24% of the recall population. The Company is not aware of any deaths, injuries, crashes or property damage claims related to this defect in the USA
Amendment 1: On April 11, 2023, MBUSA determined that a computer error involving a database update had resulted in the inadvertent exclusion of 24,373 VINs from the population reported in its Part 573 report, the initial dealer recall communication, and customer letters. However, the total recalled population was, and remains, accurately flagged as subject to the recall on dealer systems, the MBUSA recall website, and the NHTSA recall website. This amendment updates the recall population and makes related adjustments to the original Part 573 report. MBUSA intends to mail notice letters to owners of the affected vehicles on or about 4/21/2023.

This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign to check for water entry in the spare wheel well on 323,963 Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2020 GLE/ML and GLE Coupe (166 and 292 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs were flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on January 3, 2023.
Background
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2020 GLE/ML (166 platform) and GLE Coupe (292 platform) vehicles, water might intrude the rear area of the vehicle and, over time, accumulate in the spare wheel well.
An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will install a water drain plug in the spare wheel well on the affected vehicles, check for water infiltration into the spare wheel well, and replace the fuel pump control unit, if necessary.

This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Update to check for water entry in the spare wheel well on 323,963 Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2020 GLE/ML and GLE Coupe (166 and 292 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on February 10, 2023.
Background
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2020 GLE/ML (166 platform) and GLE Coupe (292 platform) vehicles, water might intrude into the rear area of the vehicle and, over time, accumulate in the spare wheel well.
An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will install a water drain plug in the spare wheel well on the affected vehicles, check for water infiltration into the spare wheel well, and replace the fuel pump control unit, if necessary. Parts The remedy is available and can be performed.

Description of the Defect : Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2020 GLE/ML (166 platform) and GLE Coupe (292 platform) vehicles, water might intrude into the rear area of the vehicle and, over time, accumulate in the spare wheel well.
FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR
Description of the Safety Risk : In certain driving situations, and depending on the amount of water that has entered the spare wheel well, the accumulated water could intermittently contact the fuel pump control unit. Consequently, the fuel supply to the engine could be interrupted, which would lead to a loss of propulsion without warning. In such circumstances, the risk of a crash could be increased.
Description of the Cause : The cause of the defect may vary due to a development deviation in combination with production tolerances and possible customer influences when loading and unloading items from the rear hatch. Each cause could lead to a different issue and water intrusion. Therefore, the tightness in the rear area might not meet specifications. Identification of Any Warning
that can Occur : Before the issue occurs, the driver may be made aware of water infiltration due to a damp carpet in the rear of the vehicle or the sound of water sloshing in the spare tire wheel well. In some cases, the driver could also be alerted to the condition by illumination of the check engine light in the instrument cluster.
When the issue occurs, the driver might notice a warning in the instrument cluster. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : PLUG Component Description : PLUG

In June 2018, Mercedes-Benz AG became aware of isolated customer complaints outside the U.S. associated with potential water penetration into the rear interior area of certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The company initiated analyses of these customer complaints beginning in June 2018. Several vehicles involved in the field complaints were obtained for examination at Mercedes-Benz AG’s facilities in Germany. These analyses identified no indications of a systematic failure that could account for water penetration into the rear of the vehicles or failure of equipment such as the fuel pump control unit. Nevertheless, in February 2019, Mercedes-Benz AG instructed relevant departments to further investigate and The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-955 Page 8 attempt to identify the cause of the complaints. Mercedes-Benz continued these analyses through November 2019, including evaluating whether different vehicle models or configurations may influence potential water infiltration. The Company conducted analyses to determine if water that entered the spare wheel well might come into contact with the fuel pump control unit, which is also positioned in that area of the vehicle, testing scenarios involving different control unit installation positions within the spare wheel well. Continuing its investigation in 2020, Mercedes-Benz analyzed whether development or production deviations, customer uses, or different ambient conditions might contribute to water infiltration into the vehicles. Please see Chronology Supplement. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : As a precautionary measure, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer , will
install a water drain plug in the spare wheel well on the affected vehicles, check for water infiltration into the spare wheel well and replace the fuel pump control unit, if necessary.
Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA plans to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since some of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described.

Continuing its investigation in 2020, Mercedes-Benz analyzed whether development or production deviations, customer uses, or different ambient conditions might contribute to water infiltration into the vehicles. entered the spare wheel well, the accumulated water could intermittently contact the fuel pump
control unit. Consequently, the fuel supply to the engine could be interrupted, which would lead to
a loss of propulsion without warning. In such circumstances, the risk of a crash could be increased.
Before the issue occurs, the driver may be made aware of water infiltration due to a damp carpet
in the rear of the vehicle or the sound of water sloshing in the spare tire wheel well. In some cases,
the driver could also be alerted to the condition by illumination of the check engine light in the
instrument cluster.

This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Update to check for water entry in the spare wheel well on 348,183 Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2020
GLE/ML and GLE Coupe (166 and 292 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate
questions from customers. Affected VINs were flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on February 10, 2023.
Background
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that
on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2020 GLE/ML (166 platform) and GLE Coupe (292 platform)
vehicles, water might intrude into the rear area of the vehicle and, over time, accumulate in the
spare wheel well. In certain driving situations, and depending on the amount of water that has
entered the spare wheel well, the accumulated water could intermittently contact the fuel pump
control unit.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will install a water
drain plug in the spare wheel well on the affected vehicles, check for water infiltration into the
spare wheel well, and replace the fuel pump control unit, if necessary.
Parts The remedy is available and can be performed.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this
notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work
Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased. Loaner
and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process,
please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s). Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of
Federal Law for rental car companies to rent vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Notice to California Dealers: As required by 13 CCR 2117, a Proof of Correction (“POC”) certificate showing that the vehicle has been
repaired under this recall must be issued by the authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, and that such a certificate may be required by
California as a condition of vehicle re-registration or operation. Please reference this POC in the attached work instructions. Failure to
complete this step may result in fines and penalties and lead to customer dissatisfaction.
Next Steps/Notes

Campaign No. 2023010002, February 2023
Revision A 2/14/2023
Revision B 2/02/2024
TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS
SUBJECT: Model GLE/ML and GLE Coupe (166 and 292 platform)
Model Year 2012-2019
Check for Water entry in the Spare Wheel Well
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on
certain Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2019 GLE/ML (166 platform) and GLE Coupe (292 platform) vehicles,
water might intrude into the rear area of the vehicle and, over time, accumulate in the spare wheel well. In
certain driving situations, and depending on the amount of water that has entered the spare wheel well, the
accumulated water could intermittently contact the fuel pump control unit. Consequently, the fuel supply to
the engine could be interrupted, which would lead to a loss of propulsion without warning. In such
circumstances, the risk of a crash could be increased. Before the issue occurs, the driver may be made
aware of water infiltration due to a damp carpet in the rear of the vehicle or the sound of water sloshing in
the spare tire wheel well. In some cases, the driver could also be alerted to the condition by illumination of
the check engine light in the instrument cluster. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will install a water
drain plug in the spare wheel well on the affected vehicles, check for water infiltration into the spare wheel
well, and replace the fuel pump control unit, if necessary.
Prior to performing this Campaign:
VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on
a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly.
Please review the entire Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.
Approximately 348,183 vehicles are affected.
