Vehicle Rollaway from Guide Bushing Fatigue
Vehicle rollaway increases the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V796
Manufacturer Daimler Vans USA, LLC
Components POWER TRAIN
Potential Number of Units Affected 124,305
Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles equipped with a manual parking brake and 7-speed automatic transmission. The guide bushing on the parking pawl may fatigue, which can cause the parking pawl not to engage and result in vehicle rollaway.
Remedy
Dealers will update the software of the electronic stability, transmission control, direct select module, and electronic ignition switch control units, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 10, 2023. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA’s numbers for this recall are 22V2790611, 22V2790612, and 22V2790613.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Update Park Lock Function
2022120008
2022120007
2022120006
This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch to update the park lock function on approximately 115,115 MY19-22 MercedesBenz Sprinter vans. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. All affected VINs will be flagged as “OPEN” in VMI and cannot be sold until repaired.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (MBAG), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Vans, has determined that on certain Sprinter (907 platform) vehicles, a component of the park lock system might wear due to specific driver parking practices and impair the safe parking of the vehicle. If the vehicle is not properly secured in accordance with parking instructions in the operator’s manual (including usage of the parking brake), it cannot be ruled out that the vehicle might roll away from its parked position under certain circumstances. Thus, the risk of an accident could increase.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA is conducting a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealer will update the software of various control units (Direct Select Module, Electronic Ignition Switch Module, Electronic Stability Program Module, and Transmission Control Unit) on the affected vehicles.
Remedy
The software is available

In December 2021, MBAG identified a factor that may contribute to the rare occurrence of a park lock function error or enhance the related rollaway risk (i.e.: the “Park Lock Support” (“PLS”) function). Although no clear and specific technical root cause for the rare phenomenon was identified at that time, a recall was launched in early 2022 to remove the PLS function from the subject vehicles.
Based on those findings, MBAG further investigated into the root cause. To assist in the investigation, MBAG purchased vehicles reported to have experienced rolling when the shift indicator was in “P”, and shipped those vehicles to Germany for further testing and analysis.
The first vehicle was tested in February 2022. During test drives, no malfunction of the park lock system was detected on this vehicle.
In order to further investigate possible influence of wear within the park lock system, MBAG carried out continuing and intensive tests through April 2022.
In parallel, MBAG repeatedly tested a transmission removed from a complaint vehicle, and conducted further test drives in May 2022. Again, no malfunction of the park lock system was observed.
In May and June 2022, sporadic malfunctions of the park lock were detected by MBAG engineers during intensive testing and analysis of a returned vehicle. This sporadic malfunction was reproducible during controlled testing.
Through September 2022, MBAG carried out further testing of disassembled transmissions.
After further intensive testing and analysis, MBAG determined in October 2022 that the above described rare and temporary park lock function error might be caused by specific wear patterns on the guide bushing in the transmission. The analyses concluded that such wear patterns are influenced by a combination of driver parking practices and low-speed ratcheting of the parking pawl when “P” is activated while the vehicle is moving at a low speed.
On October 14, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out. In an abundance of caution MBAG has decided to take additional measures to eliminate the remaining identified rolling risk and conduct a recall.

1 Associated Investigation
Vehicle Rolls Away While in Park
NHTSA ID: PE21019
Dated opened: August 2, 2021
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened this PE after receiving 11 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging that Model Year (MY) 2019 Mercedes-Benz (MB) Sprinter vans, configured for use as Amazon delivery vehicles or ambulances, roll away shortly after being shifted to park using the Auto-P function. A rollaway vehicle with no operator behind the steering wheel could potentially strike pedestrians, moving or parked vehicles or buildings, resulting in injury, fatality and/or property damage.
Analysis of data provided by MB in response to the ODI Information Request (IR) letter showed a high failure rate. Following discussions with ODI about the failures, MB decided to conduct a safety recall. On December 15, 2021, Daimler Vans USA, LLC filed recall 21V-972 covering 48,400 model year (MY) 2019-2020 Mercedes-Benz (MB) Sprinter vans.
With recall 21V-972, this investigation is closed. The affected vehicle population determined by MB is Sprinter vehicles (VS30, Platform 907) produced between June 5, 2018 and November 30, 2020 with a manual parking brake and a 7-speed automatic transmission that was manufactured between May 1, 2018 and October 31, 2019, in the Hedelfingen transmission plant in Germany.
Further use of Agency resources does not appear to be warranted. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist on other model or MY vehicles outside of the recall scope. The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.
The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at:http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAIDusing the following complaint identification numbers: 11360500, 11404893, 11404894, 11360505, 11404417, 11405798, 11405804, 11404969, 11404838, 11404891, 11415509, 11428353, 11428296, 11298470, 11428219, 11405803, 11427068, 11428216, 11428296, 11429905, 11447877, 11452051

Thus, the risk of an accident could increase.
