If the engine shuts down, there is increased the risk of a crash.
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2016-2017 AMG GLE43 Coupe, and 2017 AMG GLE43 vehicles.
The engine control unit and transmission control unit software may have compatibility conflicts and cause the engine to shut-down while the driver brakes to a stop, or accelerates following an ECO start.
Remedy
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the engine and transmission control unit software, free of charge.
The recall is expected to begin in September 2017.

| This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign with retail hold to update the ECU software on 12,322 Model Year 2016
– 2017, Model 166 and 292 platform vehicles (GLE-Class, GLE-Coupe). Please review the recall information below. The recall campaign will visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on August 25, 2017. | ||||
| Background | ||||
| Issue | Daimler AG (‘DAG’) has determined that on certain GLE (166 platform) and GLE coupe (292 platform) vehicles, the engine control unit software may not correspond to current specifications. This may result in an engine shut-down just before vehicle stop, e.g. braking in response to a traffic light or stop sign. In addition, a high engine load combined with an insufficient accelerator pedal actuation could lead to an engine shutdown following an ECO start. Depending on the traffic situation, an unintentional engine shut-down could increase the risk of a crash. | |||
| What We’re Doing | MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will program the engine and transmission control units. The remedy software is currently unavailable until late September. | |||

| Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY16-17 GLE-Class, GLE-Coupe vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the software is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. Additionally, Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY16-17 GLE-Class, GLE-Coupe Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. | ||||

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is available for purchase from Mercedes-Benz USA.
In order to use the J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the purchaser must furnish their own:
- Windows based PC or laptop*
- J2534 compliant interface box*1*
*Must be purchased from a third party company and are not available from Mercedes-Benz USA LLC.

Vehicle Coverage
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles has coverage for all required functions associated to reprogramming, initialization, and fault clearing of emission control modules (engine and transmission) fitted to vehicles 2004 Model Year and newer. Additionally all access and functionality required in regard the configuration via SCN Coding and/or CVN Coding is covered.
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is delivered via DVD media which is delivered monthly for the license term of one year upon purchase.
- All control unit software (reprogramming calibrations) is contained within J2534 DVD media.
Terms and conditions
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is purchased in 1-year license increments. During that license term the user will receive an initial software package, license key, SCN/CVN Coding information/access as well as monthly updates via DVD media.
- Additional updates of software after the 1st year can be purchased at additional cost, however are not required for the system to continue functioning.
