Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles. The generator wiring harness may have been incorrectly connected to the electric power steering system wiring harness which can result in an electrical surge. An electrical surge can increase the risk of a fire. What will your Mercedes-Benz Dealer do? An authorized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealer will inspect the connection of the harnesses and correct it, if necessary. This could take approximately 1 hour. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. All affected VINs will be flagged “OPEN” in VMI and cannot be sold until the recall has been remedied. Background Issue Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Sprinter (platform 907) vehicles, the wiring harness of the generator may have been interchanged with the wiring harness of the electric power steering system. In the event of an additional electrical fault (e.g. unrelated damage to the steering wiring harness), the interchange of the two different fused lines could result in an overload of the wiring harness of the electric power steering. As a consequence, a risk of fire cannot be completely ruled out. What We’re Doing An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the connection of the harnesses on the affected vehicles and correct it, if necessary. Parts Parts are not required for repair.
