Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021 GLB 250 vehicles. The level sensor linkage on the rear axle might not have been installed properly, which could affect the headlight leveling function.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and repair the level sensor linkage, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 10, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

Check Level Sensor Linkage Rear Axle MY21 247 (GLB-Class)
This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign launch regarding the Level Sensor Linkage Rear Axle on 88 Model Year (“MY”) 2021 247 (GLB-Class) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on May 27, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2021 GLB-Class (247 platform) vehicles, the level sensor linkage on the rear axle might not have been installed correctly. In this case, the leveling of the headlamp system could calibrate in the opposite direction if the rear seat, trunk or third row of seats were loaded appropriately. Subsequently, glare to oncoming traffic cannot be ruled out, which could increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the level sensor linkage for the rear axle on the affected vehicles and rework it, if necessary.
Parts
Parts are not required for repair. The recall remedy is available and can repairs can be performed as necessary.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY21 GLB-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY21 GLB-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Check installation position of link rod of right rear axle level sensor, correct if necessary

- Lift vehicle with vehicle lift.

- Check installation position of link rod of right rear axle level sensor (A, figure 1).
The installation position of the link rod (B) of the right rear axle level sensor (A) must be installed as shown in figure 2 (OK picture)!
The figure 3 (not OK picture) represents an incorrect installation position!
- If the Installation position of the link rod is not OK: Carry out work procedure.
- If the installation position of the link rod is OK: End measure.
Work Procedure
- Release link rod from the right rear axle level sensor. For basic data, see AR82.10-P-0005MFA.
- Position the link rod and right rear axle level sensor.
Spacer ring is seated directly under the connecting flange of the upper oil line!
- Secure link rod of the right rear axle level sensor. For basic data, see AR82.10-P-0005MFA.
- Perform function test of automatic beam range control. For basic data, see AP82.10-P-8250EW.
Chronology :
In the mid of July 2021, MBAG launched initial investigations based on an internal finding. From end of July 2021 onwards, a plant rework campaign was implemented in order to check and rework all potentially affected vehicles, which were still accessible by MBAG.
In August and September 2021, a remedy and a possibility for future error prevention was developed. At the same time it was concluded that the level sensor linkage might not have been installed according to specifications during a vehicle rework process. From October 2021 onwards, possible consequences as well as relevant regulations for vehicles in the field were analyzed. These investigations together with several test drives starting in December 2021and tests on the headlamp test bench starting in January 2021 were performed until April 2022. In parallel, further analyses were performed to identify if any vehicles in the field might be affected. MBAG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information (such as the numbers of deaths and/or injuries) related to this defect in the USA. On May 2, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.

In this case, the leveling of the headlamp system could calibrate in the opposite direction if the rear seat, trunk or third row of seats were loaded appropriately. Subsequently, glare to oncoming traffic cannot be ruled out, which could increase the risk of a crash. What We’re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the level sensor linkage for the rear axle on the affected vehicles and rework it, if necessary. Parts Remedy is not available at this time.
