March 28, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V194000
A detached thrust arm can cause a sudden loss of vehicle control, or cause the vehicle to pull to one side during emergency braking, increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V194
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components SUSPENSION, POWER TRAIN
Potential Number of Units Affected 11
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2022 S580Z, S500V, and S580V vehicles. The sub frame weld for the thrust arm on the rear axle carrier may have been improperly welded, causing the thrust arm to break and detach.
Remedy

Dealers will inspect the sub frame weld on the rear axle carrier and replace the rear axle carrier as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 8, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for the recall is 2022030028.

Check and Replace Rear Axle Carrier
This is to notify you of the STOP DRIVE Recall Campaign Launch to check and replace the rear axle carrier on 11 Model Year (“MY”) 2022 S-Class (223 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on April 1, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2022 S-Class and Maybach
(223 platform) vehicles, the sub frame welds for the thrust arm on the vehicle’s rear axle carrier might not meet current production specifications. In this case, the welds could fail suddenly and without prior warning and may cause the thrust arm to detach from the rear axle carrier. As a result, the vehicle might sway due to roadway influences. In addition, the vehicle could pull to one side in the event of emergency braking. In that case, the controllability of the vehicle would be impaired, increasing the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the sub frame weld on the rear axle carrier on the affected vehicles and replace the rear axle carrier, if necessary. Until the inspection/remedy is completed, affected customers will be instructed by the MBUSA Customer Assistance Center (CAC) to stop driving their vehicles and will assist to make arrangements with their preferred authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer to have the vehicle towed for inspection. Towing and loaner vehicles, where available, will be offered at no cost to the customer.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed. Please note that the estimated replacement rate is 10%. Parts should only be ordered in the event a replacement is required.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY22 S-Class and Maybach vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Xentry. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Until the inspection/remedy is completed, affected customers will be instructed by the MBUSA Customer Assistance Center (CAC) to stop driving their vehicles and will assist to make arrangements with their preferred authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the vehicle towed for inspection.

Chronology :
In January 2022, MBAG was notified of an isolated customer complaint outside the US in connection with noise on the rear axle carrier.
In March 2022, a second customer complaint outside the US was reported, related to an unstable driving experience, and noise was reported.
MBAG immediately launched investigations that identified an internal process deviation in the production of the rear axle carrier which occurred in September 2021 as a possible root cause.
At that time, all parts were checked and sorted out in whereby at the time MBAG believed it had caught all parts.
In order to understand possible effects MBAG started in March 2022 to perform various driving tests until March 22nd, 2022. On March 25, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is not aware of any reports involving accident or injury related to this condition.
MBUSA contacted NHTSA on March 25, 2022 to inform it of this safety recall, stop drive instructions, and that communications with owners would start as soon as possible.
After the launch of the recall measure, MBAG received in beginning of April 2022 information from a market outside of the US, that a vehicle affected from the recall was checked in a workshop and it was found that the rear axle carrier installed in that vehicle had an appearance differing from the recall working instruction. First analysis of this finding rendered that the rear axle carrier in the subject vehicle was a different version which is not affected from the recall. Subsequently, additional analyses were conducted in order to identify the reason why the subject vehicle was included in the recall measure and to review the determination of potentially affected vehicles. In the beginning of May 2022, these analyses concluded that one (1) additional vehicle in the U.S. has to be considered as a potentially affected vehicle and accordingly has been included in the recall.
