March 4, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V125000
Loose Rear Brake Caliper Housing Fasteners
Reduced brake performance can increase the risk of a crash. In addition, detached brake components can create a road hazard, and increase the risk of a crash for other drivers.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V125
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
Potential Number of Units Affected 4
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 AMG CLA 35 and 2021 GLA 250 vehicles. The rear brake caliper housing fasteners may be loose, which can reduce brake performance or cause rear brake components to detach from the vehicle.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and tighten the fasteners on the rear brake caliper housings, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 25, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Check Rear Brake Caliper Housing Bolts
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to check the rear brake caliper housing bolts on 4 Model Year (“MY”) 2020-2021 CLA-Class and GLA-Class (118 and 247 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on March 11, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020-2021 CLA-Class (118 platform) and GLA-Class (247 platform) vehicles, the rear brake caliper housing fasteners might not meet current production torque specifications. This might affect only one rear brake caliper housing per vehicle. Should this occur, affected fasteners might loosen. In this case, an incorrectly torqued fastener might reduce the braking performance of the affected rear brake, which could increase the risk of a crash. In addition, certain rear brake components may separate from the rear brake assembly and result in a road hazard, which could increase the risk of a crash for the following traffic or other road users.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the fastener torque on the potentially affected rear brake caliper housings on the affected vehicles, and if necessary, torque them according to specification.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed. Please note that the estimated replacement rate is less than 1%. Parts should only be ordered in the event a replacement is required.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY20-21 CLA-Class and GLA-Class in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY20-21 CLA-Class and GLA-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Correct torque for guide pin threaded connection at rear axle brake calipers
Model 177, 118, 243 and 247
Work Procedure
- Release screws (A, figure 1) for left and right guide pins at rear axle brake calipers and then tighten with the specified torque.
Screw, guide pin to brake caliper 30 Nm (BA42.10-P-1000-12X).
Chronology :
At the end of December 2021, MBAG received a single field report from outside the U.S. describing an instance in which a customer allegedly experienced the subject condition outlined above. Analysis was started immediately.
On January 10, 2022, MBAG received another report from a customer complaint regarding noises on the rear axle from outside the U.S. No third party damages or personal injuries were reported. Subsequently,
MBAG determined that, in the analyzed cases, the brake caliper housing bolts on the rear and front axles did not meet specifications. Further analysis determined that all affected brake caliper housings were part of a certain production batch at a supplier. Investigations were performed to check the potentially affected batch at the supplier and to identify potentially affected vehicles.
Additionally, internal testing was carried out to determine the severity of the impact on the safety of driving. On February 25, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.

- 【Compatible with】: The brake caliper tool compresses dual brake pistons simultaneously, works well on most cars and light trucks brake calipers.(PS : We are suitable for disc brake, not for drum brake, please confirm before Purchsing).
- 【Take No Time at All】: Squeeze the compression tool handle until the plunger contacts the inboard brake pad, continue squeezing to compress both pistons. Makes dual piston pad replacement a simple job.
- 【Effortless to Use】: Compared with the knob handle and swing handle, the squeezing handle can easily adjust and reduce the hand pressure and fatigue during the use process.
- 【Lasting & Reliable】: Caliper compressor is made of high quality metal material for strength, durability and resistance to corrosion, ensuring performance for long-term repetitive work.(PS : It is a normal situation for the front gray spreader pad to rotate in order to fit into the caliper)
- 【Highly Recommended】: No matter if you are a beginner or a pro, the spreader allows you to change brakes quickly and easily. If you are a professional mechanic / amateur racer / auto technician / track junkies, then this brake caliper tool will surprise and satisfy you more than others.

- 【Labor Saving】Brake repair brake spreading tool adopts 360 degree ratchet design, it is easy to get into place and use from any direction, also your hands will not get fatigued from the constant squeezing. The ratchet is in the centre of the dual piston brake caliper compressor, the two spreading plates keep parallel, make sure to spread the force on the caliper piston evenly, in case of caliper damage or pistons dislocation.
- 【Use-friendly】 Swing the long lever handle to expand and retract the spreading plates, and the positive and negative regulation is realized by flipping the reversing switch in the ratchet. Because of ratcheting mechanism, both spreading plates need pressure to start the ratchet, please squeeze them for the first few swing until the suitable size to insert into the calipers, then go ahead to swing.
- 【Premium Quality】Our brake caliper compressor uses high quality spreading plates with 1/8" thickness steel, high strength, not easy to deform. The lever handle has red cushion, skid resistance and feel good, will not hurt your hand while using. The bigger spreading plates with build-in small mag-nets and cylindrical pins, can install and unload quickly and easily from the compressor.
