December 17, 2021 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 21V990000
Front Axle Carrier May Corrode
Front axle carrier failure may result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V990
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components STEERING, SUSPENSION
Potential Number of Units Affected 38,312
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021 AMG GLB35, 2019-2020 A220, and 2020 GLB250 vehicles. The integral carrier that supports the front axle may corrode, causing it to fail.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the integral carrier, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 29, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2022070009.

Replace the Integral Carrier Front Axle
This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign to check and replace the integral carrier front axle in 38,312 Model Year (“MY”) 2019-2021 AClass and GLB-Class (177, 247 platform) ) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on July 15, 2022..
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2019-2021 A-Class (177 platform) and GLB-Class (247 platform) vehicles, the corrosion protection of the integral carrier of the front axle might not be sustained over the lifetime of the vehicle. Under specific environmental influences, corrosion of the integral carrier of the front axle might occur after several years. As a result, depending on the intensity and location of the corrosion, an impairment of the structural durability of the integral carrier as well as the connection to other components cannot be ruled out. In this case, vehicle steering might be affected which could potentially increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA is conducting a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the integral carrier on the affected vehicles and replace it, if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on 7/29/2022.
Replace front axle carrier
Work Procedure
- Replace front axle carrier.
For basic data see AR.33.10-P-0100MFA.
The threaded connections of the front axle carrier (self-tapping) may not be released or screwed in using a pneumatic wrench. There is a risk of thread damage. (Note WIS- AR.33-10-P-0100MFA) We recommend that you clean the thread on the body-in-white, before reuse, with compressed air and check for possible damage/chips.
Before partially screwing in screws, the contact surface of the front axle carrier at the body-in-white and the matching of the hole patterns must be checked.
The new screws are screwed in by hand into the thread with 3 to 4 thread turns before a manual tool (e.g. ratchet wrench) is used for tightening.
Attach screws with the specified torque.
The steering remains in the vehicle and must be tied up/secured against sagging.
One transverse control arm is released at the wheel hub to remove the front axle carrier. The second transverse control arm must be tied up/secured against sagging.

Chronology :
MBAG conducts regular internal corrosion endurance testing of manufactured parts. In May 2020, MBAG received isolated reports from its internal corrosion endurance testing indicating that the corrosion protection on certain integral carrier components of front axles did not meet MBAG specifications. MBAG immediately launched an internal investigation into this issue. In parallel, over the next several months, MBAG reviewed its supplier’s production of the integral carrier component to ensure that the part was manufactured with corrosion protection that met required specifications.
From July 2020 until May 2021, MBAG engaged in an extensive investigation to determine the range of potentially affected vehicles by retrieving parts from the field and testing them according to MBAG’s corrosion endurance testing procedures. For investigation, MBAG retrieved used parts obtained from vehicles in the field systematically in a way such that MBAG had representative samples from all relevant production periods to help MBAG define the production date range of potentially affected vehicles.
In parallel and until November 2021, MBAG conducted extensive tests to assess the potential safety effects of corrosion of the integral carrier component. Among other things, integral carriers were prepared in the corrosion endurance testing facilities to simulate different progress of corrosion and were then thoroughly tested in vehicles.
Although no defects were identified during the testing and no field complaints worldwide have been reported, MBAG determined on December 10, 2021 to initiate a recall out of an abundance of caution as a safety risk cannot be fully ruled out.

Replace front axle carrier. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Under specific environmental influences, corrosion of the integral carrier of the front axle might occur after several years. As a result, depending on the intensity and location of the corrosion, an impairment of the structural durability of the integral carrier as well as the connection to other components cannot be ruled out. In this case, vehicle steering might be affected which could potentially increase the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : Due to a production deviation at a supplier, the corrosion protection of certain integral carriers might not be sufficient. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, will check the integral carrier on the affected vehicles and replace it, if necessary.
