Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on a certain Model Year (โMYโ) 2020 CLA-Class (118 platform) vehicle, the power supply connection of the electric power steering might have been contaminated with melted adhesive. In this case, aging of the adhesive might lead to a loss of the adhesion strength and subsequently result in a loose connection. This in turn might result in an interruption of to the power supply. As a consequence, the power steering assist might fail spontaneously during driving which could increase the risk of a crash. When the issue occurs, the customer might notice increased steering forces and a red warning message regarding the power steering displayed in the instrument cluster.
What Weโre Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will check the power steering supply connection on the affected vehicles and rework, if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed. Please note that the estimated replacement rate is 3%. Parts should only be ordered in the event a replacement is required.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY20 CLA-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as โOPENโ and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).

Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination
At the end of June 2020, MBAG launched an initial investigation after several internal vehicles experienced a loss of the electric power steering assist. MBAG immediately applied an additional control measure to ensure that the correct torque had been applied to the power supply connection for the electric power steering. In July 2020, however, additional cases of vehicles experiencing a loss of electric power steering assist were reported by the production plant. Accordingly, MBAG initiated further analysis into the issue.
MBAG determined that melted adhesive loosened the power supply connection to the electric power steering in the analyzed vehicles. MBAG subsequently reviewed its supplier’s production process in detail to understand the point in the process at which the contamination may have occurred. As a result of this investigation, MBAG determined that the root cause of the issue was limited to a production deviation caused by an unauthorized rework at the supplier. An instruction regarding the correct production process was given to the supplier and visual inspection of all potentially affected vehicles in production was immediately implemented by MBAG in July 2020.
Starting in July 2020, MBAG also analyzed the potential for vehicles in the field to have departed the production plant with potentially affected adhesive used in the power supply connection. In parallel, through the first quarter of 2021, MBAG evaluated production records to determine the population of potentially affected vehicles in the field. MBAG has not received any field complaints in the US regarding this issue, but has determined that there is one (1) potentially affected vehicle in the US.
Further analyses were performed until July 2021 to assess the different possible contamination levels and its individual influence on the connection. In October 2021, MBAG also analyzed the adhesive aging processes to evaluate whether there could be potential long term impacts.
On December 10, 2021, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall for the potentially affected vehicle.

Figure 1 4. Check all cable connection and nuts for residual hot melt adhesive/contamination. Figure 2 not OK Figure 3 OK 3 P-RC-2021120016 Figure 2 not Ok. Figure 3 OK a. If one or more cable connections is contaminated with adhesive (Figure 2): Carry out work procedure. b. If no contamination is present (Figure 3): End measure. Work procedure 1. Remove contamination using a suitable tool (abrasive paper). Ensure that the contact surfaces between the nut/cable connection, and between the prefuse box and cable connection are completely clean and have a flat contact area. For basic data, see AR54.15-P-1330MFA. 2. Assemble in reverse order. All cable lug threaded connections must then be checked for the required torque. _________________________________________________ Warranty Information Damage Code Operation Number Description Labor Time (hrs.) 46 940 14 02-0850 Check threaded connection on prefuse box Includes: Disconnect/connect ground line of battery 0.6 02-0851 Rework threaded connection on prefuse box (after check) 0.1 Note: Always check ASRA for the current OP-Code times. AG Address : NR Foreign States Country : Germany Chronology : At the end of June 2020, MBAG launched an initial investigation after several internal vehicles experienced a loss of the electric power steering assist. In parallel, through the first Part 573 Safety Recall Report 21V-989 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR ยง573 quarter of 2021, MBAG evaluated production records to determine the population of potentially affected vehicles in the field. MBAG has not received any field complaints in the US regarding this issue, but has determined that there is one (1) potentially affected vehicle in the US. Further analyses were performed until July 2021 to assess the different possible contamination levels and its individual influence on the connection. Please see Chronology Supplement. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will check the connection on the affected vehicles and rework, if necessary. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. ยง 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty.
