Infotainment System May Cause Driver Distraction
Driver distraction can increase the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V931
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz

Components ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Potential Number of Units Affected 227
Summary
Mercedes-Benz
USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021 S580, 2022 EQS450, EQS580, and S500 vehicles with an active and connected Mercedes me connect account. The MBUX infotainment system might allow activation of the television and internet display while driving, causing a distraction for the driver.
Remedy
MBUSA has updated their computer server to correct the issue for most vehicles, free of charge. For vehicles that were not able to be updated remotely, dealers will provide the software update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 25, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Update MBUX System Configuration
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to update the configuration of the MBUX system on 35 Model Year (“MY”) 2021-2022 EQSClass and S-Class (223, and 297 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on January 21, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (“MBAG”) has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2021-2022 SClass (223 platform) and EQS (297 platform) vehicles with an active and connected Mercedes me connect account, the MBUX system configuration might not meet specifications. In this case, several functions and applications (e.g. TV, digital owner’s manual) would not be disabled while driving, as intended. This would allow vehicle occupants to activate those functions while the vehicle is driving. If an occupant were to actively select the function or application while the vehicle is driving, then driver distraction might result which could increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will update the MBUX system configuration in the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY21-22 EQS-Class, and S-Class in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY21-22 EQS-Class, and S-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on January 25, 2022.

Issue
Mercedes-Benz

What We’re Doing
MBUSA is conducting a voluntary recall. Mercedes-Benz
AG has updated the configuration on the MBAG server that connects with potentially affected vehicles in the United States. This has been performed by means of a correction in a Mercedes-Benz
computer server (“backend”). NO ACTION is needed by Dealers.
Parts
Parts are not required for repair. The recall remedy is available through the “backend’ server so NO ACTION needed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY21-22 EQS-Class and S-Class in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and repaired via the “backend” server. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY21-22 EQS-Class and S-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Customer Notification Timeline
No customer letters are required since all vehicles have been completed via the “backend” servers before the 60-day notice period.
Chronology :
In mid of November 2021, MBAG launched initial investigations based on an individual report from an internal vehicle in Germany that some MBUX functions and applications were not deactivated as intended while driving. Analysis of this case indicated that starting in November an incorrect configuration was available on Mercedes-Benz
’s backend server and might have been installed on vehicles in the field.
In the further course of the investigations, a detailed analysis of the consequences and possible regulatory requirements was performed. In parallel, potentially affected vehicles were identified. To date, there have been no reports of this unintended event in the United States. Mercedes-Benz
is aware of no reports of crashes or injuries caused by this anomaly anywhere. On November 19, 2021, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and acting in an abundance of caution, decided to conduct a recall.

The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on December 6, 2021. This would allow vehicle occupants to activate those functions while the vehicle is driving. If an occupant were to actively select the function or application while the vehicle is driving, then driver distraction might result which could increase the risk of a crash. What We’re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. Mercedes-Benz

On November 19, 2021, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and acting in an abundance of caution, decided to conduct a recall. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : As a precautionary measure, Mercedes-Benz AG has updated the configuration on the MBAG server that connects with potentially affected vehicles in the United States. This has been performed by means of a correction in a Mercedes-Benz computer server (“backend”) with no vehicle dealer workshop visit necessary. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Configuration of the MBUX system according to specification. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : A change in documentation ensures that this issue can no longer occur from November 16, 2021 onwards. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In this case, several functions and applications (e.g. TV, digital owner’s manual) would not be disabled while driving, as intended. This would allow vehicle occupants to activate those functions while the vehicle is driving. If an occupant were to actively select the function or application while the vehicle is driving, then driver distraction might result which could increase the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : Due to a deviation in the documentation process, as part of the regular Mercedes me connect communication between the vehicle and the vehicle backend server, the MBUX system on certain vehicles might allow activation of television and internet display while the vehicle is being driven. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The driver will not receive a warning due to the nature of the issue.
