September 10, 2021 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 21V704000
Jet Pump In Fuel Tank May Fail
An engine stall increases the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V704
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Potential Number of Units Affected 7
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021 S580 vehicles. The suction jet pump in the fuel tank may have a loose or missing nozzle, which can cause the pump to fail and result in an engine stall.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace as necessary, the fuel tank including the suction jet pump, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed October 26, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Check if your Mercedes-Benz has a Recall
This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign to check the welding of the suction jet pump nozzle on 7 Model Year (“MY”) 2021 223 (S-Class) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on September 17, 2021.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2021 S-Class (223 platform) vehicles, a nozzle in the suction jet pump in the fuel tank might not have been installed, or properly secured within the pump according to current production specifications. If the nozzle was not properly secured, it could detach within the suction jet pump. As a result, the pump might not be able to supply the fuel pressure necessary for certain driving scenarios (e.g. reduced fuel level, full throttle operation), and could lead to a sudden engine stall without warning, which could increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the fuel system on the affected vehicles and replace the fuel tank including the suction jet pump, if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed. Please note that the estimated replacement rate is 3%. Parts should only be ordered in the event a replacement is required.
Check the Suction Jet Pump Nozzle
Model 223
- Ensure use of XENTRY Diagnosis version BD/DVD (06/2021) with add-on 20752 or (09/2021) with add-on 20754 or

If two or more software updates or SCN codings are performed during one workshop visit, operation items 02-4762 and 02-5058 may be invoiced only once for each workshop order.
Check/test procedure
Use XENTRY Diagnosis to determine the fuel pump speed while the engine is idle. The suction jet pump is permanently installed in the fuel tank.
- Connect XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Check suction jet pump.
To do so, select menu item “Quick test view – N118/3 – Fuel pump control unit (FSCU10) – “Tests” – Test of component ‘Suction Jet Pump’ “.
Then follow the user guidance in XENTRY Diagnosis.
After the guided test, XENTRY Diagnosis indicates whether the tank needs to be replaced.
- Test not OK, component part must be replaced: Carry out work procedure.
- Test OK, component part need not be replaced: End measure.
Work procedure
- Replace fuel tank.
For basic data, see AR47.10-P-4100S.
