The recall campaign will not be visible on the www.safercar.gov. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on July 7, 2021. | |||
| Background | |||
| Issue | Mercedes-Benz The potential issue is described by Autoliv in its equipment report as follows: “Autoliv has determined that these seat belt assemblies do not comply with FMVSS 208 S7.1.1.5, which requires each designated seating position except the driver’s position to have “a seat belt assembly whose lap belt portion is lockable so that the seat belt assembly can be used to tightly secure a child restraint system.” The subject seat belt assemblies have a feature that converts the retractor from an emergency locking retractor (ELR) to an automatic locking retractor (ALR). The seat belts convert to the ALR mode after the webbing has been fully withdrawn from the retractor. The system is designed so that as the seat belt is released into the retractor, the ALR function remains active so a child restraint seat can be tightly secured. However, in certain seat belt assemblies the ALR function deactivates early before the webbing is fully retracted.” Based on information provided by the supplier so far, MBAG sees there is no increased risk to the safety of child restraint seat occupants. Therefore MBAG intends to file a petition for “inconsequential noncompliance”. | ||
| What We’re Doing | MBAG intends to submit a petition for inconsequential noncompliance to NHTSA. Campaign No. 2021080021, September 2021
| TO: | ALL MERCEDES-BENZ |
| SUBJECT: | Model CLS-Class, G-Class, E-Class, AMG GT-Class vehicles (257, 213, 463, 290 platform) Model year 2021-2022 Check the Rear Seat Row Seat Belts |
Mercedes-Benz
AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain MY21-22 CLS-Class, AMG GT-Class 4-door, E-Class and G-Class vehicles, the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) function for the rear seat belts might not meet current production specifications or fulfill the requirements of FMVSS 208. The ALR function automatically retracts and tightens the rear seat belt when fastening a child restraint system. Due to a deviation within the seatbelt retractor that occurred during production at the supplier, the rear seat belt ALR may deactivate early, which can result in preventing the child restraint system from being properly secured. An unsecured child restraint system can increase the risk of injury during a crash. Occupants may be made aware of the issue by an audible clicking noise that can be heard when the ALR function is activated which stops well before the seat belt webbing is fully retracted. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will check and replace, respectively, the rear seat belts on the affected vehicles if necessary.
Prior to performing this Campaign:
- VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly.
- Please review the entire Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.
Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.
Approximately 4.917 vehicles are affected.
Order No. P-RC-2021080021
This bulletin has been created and maintained in accordance with MBUSA-SLP S423QH001, Document and Data Control, and MBUSA-SLP S424HH001, Control of Quality Records.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
Check the Rear Seat Row Seat Belts
NHTSA Recall #21V483
August, 2021
Dear Mercedes-Benz
Owner,
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Mercedes-Benz
AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has decided that certain Model Year (“MY”) 2021-
2022 CLS-Class, AMG GT-Class 4-door, E-Class and G-Class vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
(FMVSS) number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection”. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected
population of vehicles
What is the Concern?
In certain MY21-22 CLS-Class, AMG GT-Class 4-door, E-Class and G-Class vehicles, the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR)
function for the rear seat belts might not meet current production specifications or fulfill the requirements of FMVSS 208. The
ALR function automatically retracts and tightens the rear seat belt when using a child restraint system. According to the
supplier, due to a geometric deviation on the sensor lever within the seatbelt retractor, the rear seat belt automatic locking
retractors may deactivate early, which can prevent the child restraint system from securing properly. An unsecured child
restraint system can increase the risk of injury during a crash. When the issue occurs, it might be noticeable that the audible
clicking noise made when the ALR function is activated stops well before the seat belt webbing is fully retracted.
An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will check and replace, respectively, the rear seat belts on the affected vehicles if
necessary.
Unfortunately, the parts to remedy this are not yet available, but we are working to obtain them as quickly as possible. As
parts become available, we will send you another letter asking you to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer
to have the recall completed free of charge.
Should you have any concerns or questions regarding your vehicle before you receive the next recall letter when remedy is
available, please contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer. If for any reason a dealer is unable to remedy your situation, we
are always happy to hear from you. Please contact us at 1-800-367-6372. A vehicle identification number (VIN)-based recall
lookup tool on our MBUSA.com website offers a search function that will indicate whether a vehicle has been subject to a
safety recall, and whether that vehicle has had the free remedy performed. Please visit www.MBUSA.com/recall.
If you are no longer the vehicle owner, or have a change of address, please complete the reverse side of this letter and return
the complete letter in the enclosed envelope. If this is a leased vehicle and the lessor and registered owner receive this notice,
please forward this information by first class mail to the lessee within 10 days to comply with federal regulations.
If a a Mercedes-Benz
dealer for any reason is unable to remedy the situation without charge, or within a reasonable amount of
time, pursuant to law 49 U.S.C. Chapter 301, you may submit a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, S.E., Washington, D.C. 20590 or call the toll-free Auto Safety Hotline
at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153); or go to https://www.safercar.gov.
We regret any inconvenience this situation may cause you.
Sincerely,
