This is to notify you of a Service Campaign Launch Notification regarding the inspection and replacement of the connection between the high-pressure fuel lines and high-pressure fuel pumps on 4,449 Model Year (“MY”) 2019-2020 E-Class (213 platform), S-Class Coupe/Convertible (217 platform), S-Class (222 platform), AMG GT 4-Door Coupe (290 platform), GLS-Class (167 platform) and G-Class (463 platform) vehicles.  Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on May 7, 2021.
Background
Issue		Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2019-2020 E-Class (213 platform), S-Class Coupe/Convertible (217 platform), S-Class (222 platform), AMG GT 4-Door Coupe (290 platform), GLS-Class (167 platform) and G-Class (463 platform) vehicles with an 8-cylinder gasoline engine, the sealing surface of the connection between the high-pressure fuel lines and the high-pressure fuel pumps might not meet specifications. In this case, potential fuel residue might occur at the connection area.  Fuel odor might only be perceptible from outside of the vehicle when the engine hood is open, however, due to the distance between the potential fuel residue and the hot parts of the engine, the risk of fire can be ruled out. Nevertheless, check the connection between the high-pressure fuel lines and the high-pressure fuel pumps on the affected vehicles for leaks and replace it if necessary.
What We’re Doing		MBUSA will conduct a service campaign. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will inspect and replace the connection between the high-pressure fuel lines and high-pressure fuel pumps on the affected vehicles.

• VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly.
• Please review the entire Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Check/test procedure

 

1. Remove engine design cover.

 

2. Lift left and right soundproofing covers of high-pressure fuel pump.

Lift until high-pressure fuel line connection (A, Figures 2 and 3) to high-pressure fuel pump is easily visible.

The soundproofing cover does not need to be removed completely to perform the check.

 

3. Check connections of left and right high-pressure fuel lines to left and right high-pressure fuel pumps for residue and/or dirt collecting near the connection (B, Figure 4)

The connection must not be dirty and/or exhibit signs of residue.

 

1. 1. No dirt collecting and/or residue present: End measure
   2. Dirty and/or residue present: Carry out work procedure.

 

Work procedure

It is possible that only one high-pressure pump or both high-pressure pump sides are affected.

Only the dirty and/or side(s) with residue must be replaced.

 

1. Replace left high-pressure file line and high-pressure fuel pump.
