Wheel Arch Covers May Detach

Detached wheel arch covers can create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Summary

Mercedes-BenzeBay logo USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020-2021 GLB250 vehicles. The wheel arch covers on the front fenders might not have been installed correctly, allow them to detach.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will check the installation of the front wheel arch covers and correct them as necessary, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed May 21, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2021040015.

This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign to check the front wheel arch cover on 2,362 Model Year (“MY”) 2020-2021 247 (GLB-Class) vehicles.  The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on April 09, 2021.

Background

IssueMercedes-BenzeBay logo AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay logo vehicles, has determined that on certain MY 2020-2021 GLB-Class vehicles (247 platform), the wheel arch covers on the front fenders might not have been installed according to current production specifications. As a result, the wheel arch cover could detach from the vehicle during driving, creating a road hazard which could increase the risk of a crash or injury for other road users.
What We’re DoingMBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer will check the mounting of the front wheel arch covers on the affected vehicles and correct their installation, if necessary.
PartsParts are not required for repair. However, the current remedy is not available at this time. An additional notification will be sent once the remedy is available.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY2020-2021 GLB-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.  Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.   As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s) 

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY2020-2021 GLB-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Mercedes-BenzeBay logo AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay logo vehicles, has determined that on certain MY 2020-2021 GLB-Class vehicles (247 platform), the wheel arch covers on the front fenders might not have been installed according to current production specifications. As a result, the wheel arch cover could detach from the vehicle during driving, creating a road hazard which could increase the risk of a crash or injury for other road users. An authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer will check the mounting of the front wheel arch covers on the affected vehicles and correct their installation, if necessary.

 

Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

  • VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly.
  • Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

 

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

This bulletin has been created and maintained in accordance with MBUSA-SLP S423QH001, Document and Data Control, and MBUSA-SLP S424HH001, Control of Quality Records.

 


Check/test procedure

 

  1. Check left and right front wheel arch liner in area of bumper as to whether correctly installed.

Pull wheel arch liner outward, starting at the bottom up to the top area of the bumper (figures 1 to 3).

If the wheel arch liner is not correctly installed, it will be possible to easily pull this out of the bumper.

 

    1. Left and/or right wheel arch liner not correctly installed: Carry out work procedure.
    2. Left and right wheel arch liner correctly installed: End measure.

 

 

Work procedure 

 

  1. Release wheel arch liner from bumper up to fender transition.

The wheel arch liner does not have to be fully removed.

 

  1. Install wheel arch liner in the following sequence.

 

  • Engage the four outer engagements (A, figures 4-5) of the wheel arch liner around the bumper, starting from the top down (figure 6).

 

  • Engage the four inner engagements (B, figure 7) of the wheel arch liner in the bumper, starting from the top down (figure 8).

After installation of wheel arch liner, check that firmly seated.
