High Voltage Wiring Harness Shield May Malfunction

Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 GLC 350e hybrid electric vehicles. The high-voltage wiring harness shield may not withstand the electrical loads produced under certain driving conditions, possibly causing an electrical malfunction and resulting in a stall.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the high-voltage wiring harness, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2020110008.

Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on October 9, 2020.

Background
Issue Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLC-Class vehicles (253 platform) with a hybrid drive, under certain driving profiles, the shield for the high-voltage wiring harness may not permanently withstand the electrical loads that are induced. When driving at higher speeds and using electric boost function (kickdown) more frequently, a contact point of the high-voltage wiring harness shielding to the power electronics might be exposed to an electrical overload. In this case, induced shield currents could cause the power electronics of the vehicle to malfunction and the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the high-voltage wiring harness on the affected vehicles.
Parts Remedy is not available at this time. An additional notification will be sent once the remedy is available.

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY20 GLC-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLC (253 platform) vehicles with a hybrid drive, under certain driving profiles, the shield for the high-voltage wiring harness may not be able to permanently withstand the electrical loads that are induced. When driving at higher speeds and when using electric boost function (kickdown) more frequently, a contact point of the high-voltage wiring harness shielding to the power electronics might be exposed to an electrical overload. In this case, induced shield currents could cause the power electronics of the vehicle to malfunction and the vehicle to stall, which could increase the risk of a crash.

Work procedure 

 

  1. De-energize high-voltage on-board electrical system. For basic data, see:
    • 70-P-1000MEH (Model 167).
    • 10-P-1150LW (Model 205).
    • 10-P-1150LHV (Model 213).
    • 10-P-1150LVH (Model 253).

 

  1. Remove upper engine cover.

 

  1. Remove exhaust system (A, Figure 1) from transmission bracket (B, Figure 1).

  1. Remove center and rear engine compartment lining, underbody lining, heat shields, stiffeners and cable ducts. Mark intermediate bearing of propeller shaft relative to underbody and remove. Do not remove exhaust system and propeller shaft.  For basic data, see:
    • 10-P-0050MSC (Model 167 with M274).
    • 10-P-0050OID (Model 167 with OM654).
    • 10-P-0050LW (Model 205, 213).
    • 10-P-0050LWX (Model 253).

 

  1. Remove cable duct (G, Figure 2) from cross strut (E, Figure 2).

  1. Expose high-voltage plug (N, Figure 3) of high-voltage wiring harness on power electronics (L, Figure 3), detach and remove.

  1. Remove screw (O, Figure 4) and remove high-voltage plug (N, Figure 4).

  1. Remove cable duct (G, Figure 5) at side from transmission.

 

  1. Remove screw (P, Figure 5) and remove upper cover (Q, Figure 5) above the high-voltage plug connector (T, Figure 5).

Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination

In July 2018, MBAG launched initial investigations based on a small number of field reports from outside the US describing instances in which customers reported that their vehicle had stalled. No property damages or personal injuries were reported during those incidents. The vehicles involved in these events share the same hybrid drive platform not offered for sale in the US.

The technical analysis continued through the end of 2018 at which point the initial results indicated a potential influence of the contact point of the shield of the high-voltage wiring harness to the power electronics as a possible factor in the reason for the vehicles stalling. The root cause of the failure mechanism of the shield for the high-voltage wiring harness could not be confirmed at that time. Nevertheless, in August 2019 MBAG implemented out of an abundance of caution a change in the design of the contact point of the high-voltage wiring harness shielding to the power electronics, but continued its technical investigation. This change was implemented in production for all hybrid drive platforms, including hybrid platforms offered for sale in the US market that are equipped with the potentially causing shield for the high-voltage wiring harness even though that at this point of time, all of the reported field cases arose from one single hybrid drive platform not offered for sale in the US.

As the investigation was ongoing, MBAG received further field reports involving additional hybrid platforms that appeared to be related to the same issue, however, still no cases had been reported from the US. Further analysis determined that induced shield currents might be higher than initially expected when the vehicle is driven at high speeds and when using electric boost function. MBAG continued to analyze this additional data and conducted an evaluation of the potential effects on the shield across hybrid platforms and depending on various driving conditions beginning in March 2020. Based on these results the potential for stalling in the affected vehicles could not be ruled out over time. On September 25, 2020, MBAG decided to conduct a recall.
