February 2, 2024 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 24V070000
Headlights Aimed Incorrectly/FMVSS 108
Incorrectly aimed headlights can reduce the visibility of oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V070
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Potential Number of Units Affected 15,502
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2022 GLC 300, 2020 GLC 350e, and 2020-2022 AMG GLC 43 vehicles. The headlights may be incorrectly adjusted too high and create a glare for oncoming traffic. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the headlight adjustment and correct it if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Inspect Headlamp Adjustment
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to inspect the headlamp adjustment on 15,502 Model Year (“MY”) 2019-2022 GLC (253 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on February 9, 2024.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain MY19-22 GLC (253 platform) vehicles, the headlamp adjustment might not meet current production specifications. In this case, the headlamps might be adjusted slightly too high and exceed the range specified by FMVSS 108 S.10 by approximately 0.15%. A headlamp adjustment that is outside of specifications may create glare for oncoming traffic, which could increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will inspect the headlamp adjustment on the affected vehicles and correct it, if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination Supplement for ODI 24-00855-30354-10
In late 2021, IIHS conducted a rating of certain GLC (253 platform) vehicles, including their headlamp adjustments. The review of the rating results concluded that those headlamps might have been adjusted at an angle that exceeded MBAG’s current production specification. The reported deviation was within the tolerance limits specified by FMVSS 108. Nonetheless, MBAG conducted plant actions to check headlamp adjustments on potentially affected vehicles and ensure headlamp adjustments were completed and consistent with current production specifications. Additionally at this time, MBAG readjusted the calibration process to avoid potential headlamp adjustment deviations in the production process. These process changes occurred in January 2022.
In July 2022, MBAG’s vehicle audit process determined that headlamps in a GLC vehicle, built prior to the internal production adjustments, were set slightly above MBAG’s internal production specifications (but still within FMVSS specifications). Based on that finding, MBAG initiated an investigation of the headlamp adjustments in GLC vehicles produced at two different plants.
MBAG conducted additional testing and analyses through the second half of 2022 until the beginning of 2023 to determine whether production lines from the two identified plants showed deviations in the headlamp adjustments. These analyses ultimately determined in mid-2023 that only vehicles with headlamps adjusted on two production lines from a single plant might not meet MBAG’s current production specifications.
In the second half of 2023 and into January 2024, MBAG conducted further investigations to determine the cause of the incorrect adjustments and the extent to which the adjustment might potentially deviate from MBAG´s production specifications. As part of that review, MBAG found that, in some instances, the headlamp angle adjustment could also slightly exceed the tolerance requirements of FMVSS 108. In parallel, MBAG reviewed field reports in late 2023 to determine if there had been any reported incidents involving the potentially affected vehicles. That review identified a single warranty claim in October 2021 pertaining to an incorrect headlamp adjustment.
On January 26, 2024, MBAG determined that a non-compliance with FMVSS 108 cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is aware of 1 warranty claim received on October 28, 2021, in the US.
MBAG is not aware of any reports of property damage, fatalities, crashes, or injury related to this FMVSS non-compliance.
