Inspect 12V and 48V Ground Connections
This is to notify you of the Safety and Emissions Recall Campaign Launch to inspect the 12V and 48V ground connections on 1,552 Model Year (“MY”) 2022-2023 C-Class (206 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on August 4, 2023.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2022-2023 C-Class (206 platform) vehicles, the 12V and 48V ground connections might not meet current torque specifications. In this case, the wiring harness connector might not be tightened sufficiently which might increase the electric resistance of the connection. As a result, the temperature in this area could increase and a risk of fire cannot be ruled out completely.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will inspect the fastening of the 12V and 48V ground connections and perform repairs, if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Notice to California Dealers: As required by 13 CCR 2117, a proof of correction (“POC”) certificate showing that the vehicle has been repaired under this recall must be issued by the dealer, and that such a certificate may be required by California as a condition of vehicle re-registration or operation. Please reference this POC in the attached work instructions. Failure to complete this step may result in fines and penalties and lead to customer dissatisfaction.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on or before August 29, 2021.

Chronology Supplement for ODI Safety Recall 23-00855-29576-10
In early 2022, MBAG initiated investigations into individual field reports from outside the US involving loose grounding bolt connections that resulted in warning messages or other complaints from customers. Although only isolated cases were known in the field at that point, MBAG’s investigations identified potential for improvements to the series bolting process for the vehicle’s wiring harness.
In March 2022, a plant action was launched to implement improvements to that process and to address any potentially affected vehicles.
In April 2022, MBAG initiated a further detailed investigation to identify whether the known field reports were caused by a single failure mechanism. During this investigation, in June 2022, MBAG received further field reports involving cases related to insufficient tightening of the grounding bolt for the engine wiring harness. These reports included vehicles produced after the March 2022 plant action.
Accordingly, from November 2022 to May 2023, MBAG evaluated potential consequences associated with insufficient tightening of the 12V and 48V ground connections. This evaluation included a review of all reported field complaints involving insufficient torque to the grounding bolts.
In March 2023, MBAG implemented several additional measures in the plant’s rework process, including weekly bolt torque checks, an additional dedicated operator for the ground connection rework, a PDA Check at the Quality Gate, and monthly sample checks. In parallel, MBAG continued its investigation into the potential consequences associated with insufficient tightening of the grounding connections, as well as identification of potentially affected vehicles.
MBAG has not received any reports of crashes, injuries, deaths, or property damage associated with this issue. However, on June 23, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is currently aware of 3 warranty claims/field reports received on June 7, 2022, June 22, 2022, and July 13 2022.

In March 2022, a plant action was launched to implement improvements to that process and to address any potentially affected vehicles. In April Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-463 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 2022, MBAG initiated a further detailed investigation to identify whether the known field reports were caused by a single failure mechanism. Please see chronology supplement.
