Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2022 EQS 450, EQS 580, 2023 Maybach
S 580, Maybach
S 680, and S 580e vehicles. The electronic stability program (ESP) software may malfunction, which can result in disabled vehicle dynamics control systems, including the anti-lock brake system, acceleration slip regulation, electronic stability program, and electronic brake force distribution (ABS, ASR, ESP, and EBD), as well as a vehicle speed display failure.

Update ESP Monitoring Software
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to update the ESP monitoring software on 7,558 Model Year (“MY”) 2022-2023 EQS and SClass (297 and 223 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on June 9, 2023
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain EQS and S-Class (297 and 223 platform) vehicles, the Electronic Stability Program (“ESP”) monitoring software might not meet current specifications. Under certain conditions, the ESP monitoring software could erroneously determine a fault condition. In that event, the ESP fault response would limit the functionality of the vehicle’s dynamic control systems (ABS, ASR, ESP, and EBD) and the speedometer could indicate a speed of 0 mph, regardless of the actual vehicle speed. This might increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will update the ESP control unit software on the potentially affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Update ESP Monitoring Software
- Always use the latest XENTRY Diagnosis software release with all available add-ons.
- Make sure to follow the operation steps exactly as described in XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Use a charger to ensure sufficient power supply to the vehicle’s on-board electrical system battery (greater than 12.5 V).
- If XENTRY Diagnosis is already connected to the vehicle, start with Work Procedure step 2. If two or more software updates or SCN codings are performed during a single workshop visit, operation items 02-4762 and 02-5058 may be invoiced only on one of the workshop orders.
Work Procedure
1. Connect XENTRY Diagnosis.
2. Update Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) control unit software.
To do this, select menu item “Quick test view – Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) – Adaptations – Control unit update – Update of control unit software”.
Then follow the user guidance in XENTRY Diagnosis.
3. Disconnect XENTRY Diagnosis.

Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination Supplement for ODI 23-00855-29445-10
In January 2022, MBAG investigated an individual field report claiming that a vehicle lost functionality of its dynamic control systems (including its anti-lock brake system, acceleration slip regulation, and electronic brake force distribution) and speedometer during operation. MBAG requested parts from the affected vehicle for further analysis.
MBAG began its analysis of the affected vehicle by focusing on the ESP pump motor. At that time, MBAG hypothesized that this component may be the source of the reported issues based on diagnostic data from the vehicle and review of the conditions that trigger this diagnostic code. That investigation did not reveal any defect in the vehicle’s ESP pump motor and did not identify a failure mechanism.
MBAG conducted further investigations between February and April 2022 using simulations of field conditions that it suspected could trigger the reported failure. Based on these tests, MBAG determined that certain driving conditions could interfere with routines executed by the ESP monitoring software at the beginning of each driving cycle. It was concluded that this interference could lead to an erroneous detection of a fault condition of the ESP pump motor power supply.
Beginning in July 2022, to address this potential error, MBAG developed and tested an ESP software update.
At the end of 2022, MBAG conducted a general internal review of factors affecting the function of the ESP system as well as how such issues are classified and managed. Based on this review, in January 2023, MBAG commenced analyses to determine if there were potential safety consequences of an erroneous detection of a fault condition of the ESP pump motor power supply.
As part of this review, during March and April 2023, MBAG and its supplier, conducted driving tests to determine the potential impacts of the subject fault condition on vehicle performance (especially ESP and other dependent systems). In parallel, MBAG analyzed production records pertaining to this ESP control unit software version to identify the population of potentially affected vehicles.
On May 12, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk could not be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is currently aware of 96 field reports (including warranty claims, field reports, and service reports) in the US from March 23, 2022 to May 12, 2023 that are potentially related to this defect. MBAG is not aware of any reported crashes, injuries, or property damage in connection with this issue.

The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on June 9, 2023. Background Issue Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain EQS and S-Class (297 and 223 platform) vehicles, the Electronic Stability Program (“ESP”) monitoring software might not meet current specifications. What We’re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will update the ESP control unit software on the potentially affected vehicles. Parts The remedy is available and can be performed. Based on these tests, MBAG determined that certain driving Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-360 Page 4 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 conditions could interfere with routines executed by the ESP monitoring software at the beginning of each driving cycle. Please see the Chronology Supplement. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will update the ESP control unit software on the potentially affected vehicles. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty. What We’re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall.
