Replace Tires

This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to replace all four tires on 3 Model Year (“MY”) 2023 CLA (118 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safecar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on April 14, 2023.

Issue

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that the tires on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2023 CLA (118 platform) vehicles might not meet specifications due to a certain batch of tires having irregularities in the bead area of the tire. Air leaking from the tire or a sudden loss of air pressure cannot be ruled out completely. This might impair the driving stability of the vehicle, which could increase the risk of a crash or injury.  In the event of a loss of tire air pressure, the driver might be made aware of the issue by a yellow warning lamp, warning tone and a warning message “Check Tires” or “Please Correct Tire Pressure” in the instrument cluster.

Parts

MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall.  An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership will replace all four tires on the affected vehicles.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Chronology :

In the end of December 2022, MBAG launched initial investigations based on the voluntary disclosure of the supplier describing a suspected behavior of tires regarding a loss of air pressure. Immediately, analysis for the failure mechanism and root cause were initiated together with the supplier. During this investigation, a batch of suspect tires was analyzed via X-ray technology and it was discovered that an irregularity in the bead area had led to a loss of air pressure. On the basis of these findings and evaluations of further X-ray analyses and weight measurements, a certain batch of potentially affected tires was determined.

In the beginning of 2023, MBAG initiated a plant campaign in order to identify, block and rework potentially affected vehicles. In parallel, MBAG together with its supplier conducted intensive investigations on potential consequences.

Since vehicles had left the plant without rework, the potentially affected vehicles in the field were determined based on the information of the supplier.

On March 24, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.

MBAG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information (such as the numbers of deaths and/or injuries) related to this defect in the USA.
