Summary

Replace Prefuse Box
This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign launch to replace the prefuse box on 6 Model Year (“MY”) 2020 167 (GLE-Class) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on March 25, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE-Class (167 platform) vehicles, the wiring harness to the prefuse box in the engine compartment might not be properly secured according to current production specifications. In this case, the wiring harness to the prefuse box might experience vibrations while driving. Over time, this might result in fuses opening unintentionally within the prefuse box. Subsequently, certain fused systems or components may deactivate (e.g. steering assist, headlamps, wiper system). In that case, depending on the affected system, the risk of a crash might be increased. When the issue occurs, the driver might notice a corresponding warning message in the instrument cluster for the system or component affected.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check and replace the prefuse box on the affected vehicles if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY20 GLE-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Xentry. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY20 GLE-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination
In September 2018, MBAG acted in response to a report from the supplier, who had discovered the subject condition in a standard validation test of parts. First analyses indicated vibrations of the wiring harness to be an issue. To eliminate the possibility of excess vibrations of the wiring harness, MBAG asked the supplier to develop a fix immediately. As a preventive measure, the supplier implemented a cable retainer to secure the wiring harness. MBAG reviewed logistics documents together with the supplier to determine which vehicles might potentially be affected. The review determined that all potentially affected vehicles remained in MBAG’s control. MBAG reworked all potentially affected vehicles (installing the cable retainer) that were in access by the end of 2018. In the beginning of 2019, the company assumed that all potentially affected vehicles had been reworked and no unreworked vehicles had been released from the plant.
In the course of a standard review of prior plant actions in Februrary 2020, it was detected that some potentially affected vehicles may have left the plant without being reworked. Further analyses to determine which vehicles had reached the field and possible consequences in the field were initiated. From March to June 2020, MBAG operations were severely restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As operations began to resume in June 2020, the issue was considered to occur at a later point of time in the vehicle’s lifetime.
In August 2021, after continuous field monitoring, no cases from the field were detected. Analyses resumed again and in December 2021, possible consequences during the lifetime of the vehicles were finally determined. It could not be ruled out with certainty that in a very unlikely case due to an unfavorable combination of cable routing and driving situation, the described issue could potentially occur over the lifetime of the vehicle.
On February 11, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.

The recall population was determined through production records. Vehicles outside of the recall have the wiring harness properly secured at the prefuse box. Production Dates : JUL 07, 2018 – DEC 04, 2018 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE-Class (167 platform) vehicles, the wiring harness to the prefuse box in the engine compartment might not be properly secured according to current production specifications. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In this case, the wiring harness to the prefuse box might experience vibrations while driving. Over time, this might result in fuses to open unintentionally within the prefuse box. Subsequently, certain fused systems or components may deactivate (for example steering assist, headlamps, wiper system). In that case, depending on the affected system, the risk of a crash might be increased. Description of the Cause : Due to a deviation in the development process, the affected vehicles might not be equipped with a cable retainer to secure the wiring harness at the prefuse box. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-098 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : When the issue occurs, the driver might notice a corresponding warning message in the instrument cluster for the system or component affected. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : fuse box in the engine compartment Component Description : fuse box Component Part Number : A 167 540 44 28 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Kromberg and Schubert Mexico Address : Parque Industrial Colinas del Rincón Libramiento Sur Km. 3.5 San Francisco del Rincón, Gto Foreign States No. 2000, Country : Mexico Chronology : In September 2018, MBAG acted in response to a report from the supplier, who had discovered the subject condition in a standard validation test of parts. It could not be ruled out with certainty that in a very unlikely case due to an unfavorable combination of cable routing and driving situation, the described issue could potentially occur over the lifetime Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-098 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 of the vehicle. Please see chronology supplement. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer , will replace the prefuse box on the affected vehicles. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Prefuse Box Remedy Part No: fuse box A 167 540 44 28 Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The implementation of an additional cable retainer ensures that this issue can no longer occur from December 05, 2018 onwards.
