Check if your Mercedes-Benz has a Recall
Check Driver Airbag Module
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to check the driver airbag module on 50 Model Year (“MY”) 2021 GLB-Class (247 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on March 11, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that certain MY21 GLB-Class (247 platform) vehicles might not be equipped with the driver airbag module according to current production specifications. Depending on the driver airbag module installed, different consequences could result when the airbag deploys. If the driver airbag deploys, it might not provide its restraint function as intended. In addition, the airbag module might detach from its mounting location within the steering wheel hub during deployment and potentially contact occupants. Thus, in the event of a crash with a driver airbag deployment, the risk of injury to the occupants might be increased.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will check and replace the front driver airbag module on the affected vehicles, if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed. Please note that the estimated replacement rate is 15%. Parts should only be ordered in the event a replacement is required.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY21 GLB-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY21 GLB-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Check driver’s airbag, replace if necessary
Model 247
Check/test procedure
- Remove driver’s airbag.
For basic data, see AR91.60-P-0663MFA.
- Determine part number of driver’s airbag in the XENTRY Portal “parts process” and compare with the item number of the removed driver’s airbag (A, figure 1).
The determined part number from the parts process must match with the part number of the installed driver’s airbag.
When removing the driver’s airbag for the first time, the right and left opening at the steering wheel must be pierced. Extreme caution is required to avoid causing damage to the area or personal injury
- Determined part number from the parts process does not match with the installed part number: Perform work procedure.
- Determined part number from the parts process matches with the installed part number: End measure.
Work Procedure
- Replace driver’s airbag according to AR91.60-P-0663MFA.

Chronology :
In June 2021, MBAG launched initial investigations based on findings in the vehicle production plant that the driver airbag module installed in certain vehicles might not meet specifications. In the course of these investigations, it was determined that during a prior plant rework campaign to replace steering wheels in certain vehicles, driver airbag modules might have been interchanged with those from different vehicles.
In July 2021, the investigation determined that it was not possible to reliably identify potentially affected vehicles with incorrectly fitted airbag module based on available documentation and data.
Accordingly, between August and December 2021, all theoretically possible combinations based on the different available modules of airbags, steering wheels and country-specific vehicle configurations were evaluated to determine if they could potentially affect occupants or vehicle safety.
Worldwide, MBAG has received no complaints or reports of personal injuries, fatalities, or third party damages in connection with an interchanged driver airbag module in the potentially affected vehicles.
In early 2022, potentially affected vehicles in the field were identified.
On February 4, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.

AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that certain Model Year (“MY”) 2021 GLB-Class (247 platform) vehicles might not be equipped with the driver airbag module according to current production specifications. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Depending on the driver airbag module installed, different consequences could result when the airbag deploys. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-078 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of the Cause : Due to a production deviation, the driver airbag module installed in the vehicle might not meet current production specifications. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The driver will not receive a warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Driver’s Airbag Component Description : Driver’s Airbag Component Part Number : A00086053009116 Component Name 2 : Driver’s Airbag Component Description : Driver’s Airbag Component Part Number : A00086071009116 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Joyson Safety Systems Aschaffenburg GmbH Address : Bahnweg 1 Aschaffenburg Foreign States 63743 Country : Germany Chronology : In June 2021, MBAG launched initial investigations based on findings in the vehicle production plant that the driver airbag module installed in certain vehicles might not meet specifications. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-078 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 In early 2022, potentially affected vehicles in the field were identified. On February 4, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check and replace the front driver airbag on the affected vehicles, if necessary. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Airbag module according to current production specifications. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : A change in the production procedure ensures that this issue can no longer occur from February 25, 2021 onwards. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Dealers will be notified of the pending voluntary recall campaign on February 18, 2022. Owners will be notified of the voluntary recall campaign before April 12, 2022. A copy of all communications will be provided when available.
