Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2016-2018 AMG GT vehicles. The bonding between the carbon-fiber driveshaft and the flange may be insufficient, which could result in driveshaft separation.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the carbon-fiber driveshaft, as necessary, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed October 15, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2021090008.

Check/test procedure
- Remove lower engine compartment lining (A, figure 1).
- Open maintenance access on engine-side drive shaft housing.
Rotate engine at center bolt in direction of rotation until affixed label on drive shaft is visible.
Rotate engine at center bolt in direction of rotation with a 27 mm open end wrench.
- Check part item number (B, figure 3) of drive shaft.

Carry out work procedure.
b. If part item number is A 190 410 06 00 or A190 410 14 00 or A 190 410 23 00: End measure.
The findings from the check/test procedure must be documented in writing on the work order.

Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination
By mid-2020 MBAG observed seven worldwide field reports, three of which were from the US that were received on November 29, 2017, April 23, 2018 and April 16, 2019 where customers had reportedly experienced issues with the performance of the transmission and some events where the vehicle lost motive power on their vehicle. The data did not suggest a larger trend and the possibility that the bonding performance of the parts was due to individual customers tuning their AMG vehicles in excess of factory specifications.
However, since there had already been a recall affecting the carbon fiber driveshaft in 2019 (NHTSA ID 19V457) MBAG requested a return of parts from the field to analyze if these cases were potentially caused by the same cause.
The returned parts from the field were analyzed thoroughly by a third-party facility including a mass spectrometry analysis, which indicated the presence of residue on the driveshaft and flanges. In particular, the presence of residue from potassic, fatty acids, quaternary ammonium compound and fatty alcohol polyglycolether was observed. The presence of these substances suggested that the parts had not been sufficiently cleaned at the supplier prior to installation in the vehicle. This was in contrast to the recall in 2019, where – due to a deviation in the process of the supplier – the driveshaft was wrapped in protective paper that left a silicone residue on the driveshaft surface.
In parallel, a detailed warranty analysis was conducted and further potentially affected parts were returned from the field for analysis. One of these cases was in the US, received in February 20, 2021. The parts were received and an analysis was performed.
In Spring 2021, as part of that effort, these parts were also found to contain the same types of residue on the driveshaft as those identified in the analysis started in 2020. Furthermore, the potentially affected vehicles in the field were identified.
On June 18, 2021, MBAG decided to conduct a recall to address the issue.

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2016-2018 AMG GT-Class vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.
What is the Concern?
In certain MY16-18 GT-Class vehicles, the bonding between the carbon-fiber driveshaft and the engine/transmission flange might be insufficient. Insufficient bonding between the carbon-fiber driveshaft and the flange could result in driveshaft separation, resulting in the loss of drive power, which could increase the risk of a crash. If this issue were to occur, the driver would be alerted by the check engine warning lamp in the instrument cluster and by the vehicle possibly emitting grinding or other noises.
An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the carbon-fiber driveshaft on the affected vehicles and replace it, if necessary.
Unfortunately, the parts to remedy this are not yet available, but we are working to obtain them as quickly as possible. As parts become available, we will send you another letter asking you to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the recall completed free of charge.

Reimbursement to Customers for Repairs Performed Prior to Recall
If you have already paid to have this recall condition corrected, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement. Requests for
reimbursement may include parts, labor, fees and tIDCes. Reimbursement may be limited to the amount the repair would have cost if
completed by an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer. The following documentation must be presented to your dealer for reimbursement.
Original or clear copy of all receipts, invoices and/or repair orders that show:
• The name and address of the person who paid for the repair.
• The Vehicle Identifica tion Number (VIN) of the vehicle that was repaired.
• What problem occurred, what repair was done, when it was done and who repaired it.
• The total cost of the repair expense that is being claimed.
• Proof of payment of repair (copy of front and back of cancelled check or copy of credit card receipt).
• Reimbursement will be made by check from your dealer. If your claim is denied you will receive a letter from
MBUSA within 60 days of receipt with the reason(s) for the denial.
