February 5, 2021 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 21V056000
Reverse Light Remains Illuminated/FMVSS 108
If the reverse light remains illuminated in a gear other than reverse, it may cause confusion about the driver’s intention to other motorists, and increase the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V056
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Potential Number of Units Affected 8,186
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 GLE350 and GLE450 vehicles. The lighting control unit may malfunction and cause the left exterior reverse light to remain illuminated after the transmission is shifted into a different gear. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Remedy
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the lighting control unit, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 10, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2022050004.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Check if your Mercedes-Benz has a Recall
This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign to replace the lighting control unit on 8,199 Model Year MY2020 167 (GLE-Class) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on June 24, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE-Class vehicles (167 platform), the lighting control unit may not meet current production specifications. In this case, the left exterior backup lamp may remain illuminated even though the reverse gear of the vehicle’s transmission is no longer selected, a condition which may fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (“FMVSS”) No. 108 S7.6.5. Further, this condition may confuse or reduce the ability to warn other motorists of the driver’s intention to operate the vehicle in reverse, increasing the risk of a crash. All other external lamps including right exterior backup lamp operate as intended.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the respective control unit on the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed. Please note that the estimated replacement rate is less than 1%. Parts should only be ordered in the event a replacement is required.

Supplement to Original Submission
Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination
In June 2019, MBAG became aware, during a regular quality inspection in the production process, of a single vehicle which exhibited a permanently illuminated left exterior backup lamp. Subsequently, MBAG initiated an investigation in conjunction with the supplier.
MBAG’s supplier found that on the subject control unit, the contact pins for the left exterior backup lamp had been manufactured at the tolerance limit. Accordingly, the supplier redefined their tolerance limits and initiated an optimization of the pin assembly. At this point in time, this case was judged to be an isolated case.
In late autumn 2019, MBAG was made aware of a small number of customer complaints where it was reported that the left rear backup lamp remains illuminated.
The vehicles had low vehicle mileage at the time of the report and the investigation was focused on understanding whether these isolated reports were potentially related.
MBAG also initiated an investigation of vehicles located at the all production facilities and Vehicle Preparation Centers and in the winter of 2019, and any vehicles found to have an affected backup lamp were reworked.
In late summer of 2020 MBAG was made aware of further customer complaints of the left side reverse lamp remaining illuminated. Further investigations were initiated in order to identify the failure mechanism, the affected vehicle population, the location of the vehicles, and if the vehicles were not reworked within the above mentioned plant measure. The investigation found the vehicles were not reworked within the above mentioned plant measure. The technical investigation found that even with one illuminated backup lamp, the vehicles’ brake lamps and turn signal functions were not affected so that following motorists would be able to detect the operator’s intention to turn or slow/stop the vehicle.
In autumn 2020 MBAG additionally reviewed the relevant regulatory requirements to determine whether or not the vehicles fullfilled the requirements despite the proper operation of the other rear exterior lamps.
On January 29, 2021, MBAG determined that there was a technical noncompliance regarding the market-specific regulatory requirements.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL This INTERIM notice applies to your vehicle, Replace Lighting Control Unit NHTSA Recall #21V056 March, 2021 Dear Mercedes-Benz Owner, This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLEClass vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (“FMVSS”) 108 (lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment). Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles. What is the Concern? On certain MY 2020 GLE-Class vehicles, the left exterior backup lamp may remain illuminated even though the reverse gear of the vehicle’s transmission is no longer selected. Such a condition would fail to conform to the requirements of FMVSS 108. Moreover, this condition might confuse other motorists or reduce the ability to warn other motorists of the driver’s intention, which could increase the risk of a crash. Please note that should this condition occur, all the vehicle’s other external lamps would continue to operate properly. To remedy this issue, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the lighting control unit on the affected vehicles. Unfortunately, the parts to remedy this condition are currently not yet available. We are working to obtain the necessary parts to correct this condition as quickly as possible. As the parts become available, we will send you another letter asking you to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the recall completed free of charge. Should you have any concerns or questions regarding your vehicle before you receive the next recall letter when parts are available, please contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer.
