Rear Middle Seatbelt Anchor Plate may be Loose

The seatbelt for a passenger seated in the rear middle seating position might not be properly secured, which could increase the risk of an injury in the event of a crash.

Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2018-2019 GLA250 and GLA250 4MATIC vehicles. The left anchor plate of the rear middle seatbelt may be loose.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the left anchor plate of the rear middle seatbelt, correcting its installation as necessary, free of charge. The recall began September 13, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2019080010.

This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign regarding the rear middle seat belt on 3,435 Model Year (“MY”) 2018-2019 GLA-Class (156 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on September 10, 2019.
Background
Issue Daimler AG, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2018-2019 GLA-Class vehicles (156 platform), the left anchor plate for the rear middle seatbelt might not be bolted according to current production specifications. In this case, the left anchor plate of the rear middle seatbelt would only be kept in position by the rear seat bench cushion. If a passenger were to attempt to fasten the rear middle seatbelt for the first time, the left anchor plate would immediately become loose. As a result, the seatbelt for a passenger seated in the rear middle seating position might not be properly secured, which could increase the risk of

an injury in the event of a crash.

What We’re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the left anchor plate for the rear middle seatbelt on the affected vehicles and, if necessary, correctly bolt

it onto the vehicle body.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY18-19 GLA-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s)

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY18-19 GLA-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2018- 2019 GLA-Class vehicles (156 platform), the left anchor plate for the rear middle seatbelt might not be bolted according to current production specifications. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the left anchor plate for the rear middle seatbelt on the affected vehicles and, if necessary, correctly bolt it onto the vehicle body.

 

Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

  • Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired. Always Check VMI for any open campaigns, and perform
  • Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

 

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Check procedure

 

  1. Check whether seat belt end fitting of center rear seat belt is attached correctly.

 

  • Grasp seat belt strap of center rear seat belt in area of rear seat cushion and rear seat backrest and pull away from rear seat (Figure 1).

It is possible that the seat belt end fitting of the center rear seat belt is not attached and is just jammed.

Work procedure

 

  1. Remove rear seat cushion.

For basic data, see AR91.12-P-1020NKC.

  1. Remove threaded connection (A, Figure 2) of seat belt buckle (B, Figure 2) for left rear seat belt and seat belt end fitting for center rear seat belt.

 

  1. Screw seat belt end fitting (C, Figure 2) for center rear seat belt to left seat belt buckle. Torque 35 Nm.

Order: Seat belt buckle, seat belt end fitting, nut.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2018-2019 GLA-Class vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

What is the CONCERN? DAG has determined that on certain MY 2018-2019 GLA-Class vehicles (156 platform), the left anchor plate for the rear middle seatbelt might not be bolted to the body according to current production specifications. In this case, the left anchor plate of the rear middle seatbelt would only be kept in position by the rear seat bench cushion. If a passenger were to attempt to fasten the rear middle seatbelt for the first time, the left anchor plate would immediately become loose. As a result, the seatbelt for a passenger seated in the rear middle seating position might not be properly secured, which could increase the risk of an injury in the event of a crash.
What will your DEALER DO? An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the left anchor plate for the rear middle seatbelt on the affected vehicles and, if necessary, correctly fasten it onto the vehicle body.
